Calling All Designers

I just received this from Henri Bendel. If you are a designer or know of a designer check out this opportunity to have your designs seen in the hopes of being discovered and landing a great gig. This “casting call” has been going on for the past 40 years and has launched a handful of designers like Anna Sui, Todd Oldham, and Collette Malouf just to name a few.

#Cool Sitings: Blogs

I originally started this post back in January of this year and was never really able to finish it. Don’t ask me why or what happened…short attention span maybe?

Anyway, today I was motivated to finish it but from a different angle. Initially I was going to only focus on black blogs (not the color silly, the people that run them!) but decided to focus on those on my blogroll and ones I virtually stumble across. So, as I always say “Sharing is Caring”; my other one is “If It’s Free It’s Me” (I actually have to credit my homegirl Sandy Nelson /The Camden Media Agency for that one) just in case you were wondering. Here, I share with you, my “Daily Roll-bys”; that’s actually what I want to name my blogroll but don’t know how to change it yet; working on it.

Street Etiquette : It’s funny when I first went to their blog I just knew they were from Europe. NOPE!!! These Bronx brothas sense of style takes you back to when things were dapper, clean, and well manicured. These aficionados of vintage wares, throw a current twist to their styles. Take a cruise on over to their site and you’ll know exactly what I am talking about. Make sure you take a look at Black Ivy a project they put together with like-minded cats; it will really blow your minds. I truly appreciate the quick history plug at the end of their post regarding the featured fashion.

Where Did You Get That? : Karen Blanchard is a stylist in New York and has a peerless sense of  fashion; in other words, she has her OWN style.

Ronda Brown Art: Gotta plug my folks.  For all lovers of art and every configuration of  it, this mystically baptized  artwork is a must see. It will definitely move you. Check out her “Mic” series of hip-hop artist she’s photographed in action and then converted into malachitesque oils.

Frolab: Afros unite! Jewell and Cognito are LA locals who are heavy contributors of musical art. What that means is, they are dope graphic designers, photographers, and promoters of the hip-hop scene but with a fresh anomalous approach… I am proud to say, I’ve been FroSpotted and have earned my Frolab badge.  Spend a day in the life with these two and you just might up your value in hip-hop culture.  Love their mentality, “Pick Fros not Fights! is their motto.

BHERC (Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center): I’ve posted about this site previously. Remember, this is the home to First Weekend Club. If you haven’t taken a trip over there yet you are doing yourself an injustice. Great resource site for those looking to get into the Hollywood scene or anyone already involved. Wonderful place to get your projects exposed and out to the public.
Ok, I know it may seem like I did focus just on black blogs/bloggers with this post but I have more to share with you. I promise, there will be more “Cool Sitings” posts coming soon. Also, leave a comment and tell me some of your favorite “Roll-bys”. Remember “Sharing is Caring”.

Alvin Ailey

This is a wonderful thing! I am all for the arts especially for the youth (seeing that they are being striped away, scaled down, and almost non-existed at the schools). I was at my daughter’s school the other day I got really excited when I saw the poster for this.

Alvin Ailey is holding auditions for their 2011 Junior Division Summer Intensive Program (click here for audition dates in your area). It’s a 5 week program from June 27-July 29 2011, for dancers with at least 3 years of consistent training, ages 12-15. For more information click here. Also, while you’re on their beautiful web-site (the images are breathtaking) check out the dates for their North American Tour and the historic “Our Story” time-line; Mr. Ailey set the bar (no pun intended) pretty high! Gotta love it!!!

"Black Dynamite The Animated Series"

You guys just don’t know how excited I was when I opened up my email from Iroko Entertainment and found these captivating exclusive animated stills of  Black Dynamite waiting for me (good lookin’ Monica & Carl)! Of course I had to share them.

Adult Swim and Executive Producer Carl Jones (The Boondocks and Freaknik-The Musical) are putting in much work flipping the cult feature film sensation and turning it into an animated series. Can we say BRILLIANT move!  Not missing a beat with continuity, the animated series will feature the voice talents from Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley, Clifton Powell, Byron Minns and JB Smoov.  I can tell you now,  just from these stills the series will definitely be one for the books.

For those of you on the Eastside. Comic Con New York (Oct. 9th) will have a panel with Scott Sanders, Adrian Young, and Andre Torres (Wax Poetics) as well as an exclusive first look at  footage from the series. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed paying Black Dynamite a little visit at Comic Con, as a matter of fact, I’m sure it will be in your favor.  Series review coming soon.

¡Viva La Habana!

I am fiending to get back to Cuba and this animation isn’t diminishing my appetite! Chico & Rita is a mature animated feature that begins in Old Havana (1948) and takes us all over the globe, from Paris to New York to Hollywood.  It’s a sultry story centered around a young piano player (Chico), a beautiful young cabaret singer (Rita), and their passionate desires; not just for each other but for success.

Just from the trailer you can tell this is a work of art, a visual and aural succulent treat. Opening in UK theatres November 19th this year. Why is that the UK always gets the coolest stuff first?! I can’t wait for this animation to make it across the pond. Look for a review soon.
